Jacksonville's two biggest companies may or may not make headlines on their own next year, but both are sure to be the subject of widespread speculation. This year ended with renewed talk about consolidation in the railroad industry, despite regulatory hurdles that would make a merger involving the seven largest North American railroads difficult, including CSX Corp. However, the CEO of one of the other seven, Hunter Harrison of Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd., recently suggested Jacksonville-based CSX is 'in play.'

Dec 18 Two years after going public as a fund managers' favorite, New York City-area specialty grocer Fairway Group Holdings Corp now sees its shares selling for less than a pack of organic gum. At around 70 cents per share, the company is down 94 percent from its April 2013 initial public offering price and is in danger of being delisted from the Nasdaq for trading below $1 for 30 consecutive days.

Kroger, the country's largest supermarket chain by revenue, is expanding its in-store beer tap stations to drive customer traffic and bring more beer lovers into its stores. This fall, the company is expanding its beer program to Cincinnati, Georgia, and Virginia stores.
