Chemical tanks' foes appeal to MPCA

On St. Paul's West Side, opponents of a proposal to install eight chemical containment tanks along the Mississippi River have taken their concerns to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, which will determine whether the plan calls for state environmental review. Representatives of Roseville-based Hawkins Inc. have said they already maintain four storage tanks at 701 Barge Channel Road to hold ferric chloride and caustic soda, or lye, chemicals used in water treatment by the city of St. Paul and the Metropolitan Council.

San Bruno: PG&E seeks to skirt criminal culpability, loses appeal of PUC fine

A state appeals court on Tuesday upheld a state agency's decision to fine PG&E $14.35 million for blunders linked to its pipeline operations in San Carlos while, at the same time, the utility is laying the groundwork to avoid being held criminally responsible for the fatal San Bruno blast. PG&E's efforts in the criminal case suggest that a lengthy battle looms before the start of the trial, now scheduled for March 2016.
