Judge: Workers at 25 closing A&Ps won't have 'bumping rights'

A federal bankruptcy judge has decided that senior workers at 25 supermarkets owned by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. that are slated to close, including Waldbaum's locations, will not be able to replace employees with less seniority working at other stores, union officials confirmed.

Judge lets A&P limit seniority bumping; unions granted higher severance

Bankrupt supermarket chain A&P and the union representing most of its store workers each won a partial victory in bankruptcy court Tuesday, with the judge allowing the company to place restrictions on seniority bumping rights at 25 stores scheduled to close by mid-October, but also recommending more severance pay for workers at those stores than what Montvale-based A&P sought to pay its employees. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain said he understands that workers are frustrated that The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., commonly known as A&P, isn't standing by its contractual promises, but added that "bankruptcy as a whole is about broken promises."

Wafer bumping is an advanced process technology where "bumps" or balls made of a lead-free alloy are formed on the wafers before they're cut into chips.
