Ubuntu Edge: The desktop-replacement smartphone thats doomed to fail
2013-07-24 16:06:14| Extremetech
Two days ago, Canonical unveiled its next gambit to push Ubuntu into the hands of consumers: The Ubuntu Edge smartphone. If the Edge Indiegogo project can raise $32 million before August 22, 40,000 Ubuntu Edge smartphones will enter the mobile ecosystem in May 2014 -- if the project fails, Canonical says that it will instead focus on bringing Ubuntu to commercially available smartphones, and that the Edge will quietly disappear into the digital ether. And trust me, the Edge will fail.

Canonical announces Ubuntu Edge smartphone
2013-07-23 09:19:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Canonical has announced plans to raise USD 32 million to develop a smartphone running on Ubuntu. The fundraising will take place over 30 days on the site Indiegogo and go towards an initial production run of 40,000 Ubuntu Edge, the first phone running the Ubuntu mobile operating system. Backers committing USD 600 on the first day of the fundraising drive or USD 830 thereafter will receive one of the handsets. The Ubuntu Edge offers the features of both a smartphone and PC, Canonical said. It can dual-boot the Ubuntu phone OS and Android and transform into a PC when docked with a monitor. To support the power of a PC, the Ubuntu Edge will be equipped with the "latest, fastest components", including at least 4 GB RAM, 128GB storage and a quad-core processor. The device will come with a 4.5-inch Sapphire crystal screen to prevent scratches and cracking, use long-life silicon anode battery technology and come with dual-band LTE to support use in both Europe and the US. It will be able to connect to a monitor or TV over HDMI, as well as support Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth.
