Is opening relations with Cuba a good idea?

The news is thick with pundits either applauding or denouncing President Obama’s executive order reinstituting diplomatic relations with Cuba. While lifting the 50-year-old trade embargo with the island nation will require an act of Congress, Obama’s move will loosen U.S. travel restrictions to Cuba. This week’s online question at beefmagazine.com is: “Is opening diplomatic relations with Cuba a good idea?” Yes, 50 years is long enough. Yes, but Obama should have gone to Congress. No, not until Cuba disavows communism. I dont care either way. Dont know.

Countrywide Whistle-Blower to Receive More Than $57 Million A former Countrywide Financial executive who became a whistle-blower is collecting more than $57 million for helping federal prosecutors force Bank of America to pay a record $16.65 billion penalty in connection with its role in churning out shoddy mortgage and related securities before the financial crisis. Edward O'Donnell reached an agreement last week with the government that enables him to collect part of the settlement that Bank of America agreed to pay in August in a deal with federal prosecutors and a number of state attorneys general, according to a court filing.

The long-awaited Whole Foods Market at the Palm Beach Outlets will open Feb. 25 , the natural foods market chain has announced. The West Palm Beach location is one of four South Florida stores slated to open in quick succession in the New Year.

Downtown Miami residents will have a place to purchase sustainable seafood, local produce, and organic foods when Whole Foods Market opens January 14. The market is part of the Texas-based grocer that has been named one of Fortune Magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For" every year since the list began in 1998. The 41,000 square foot store, located at 299 SE Third Street, will be the company's 22nd location in Florida, and is part of a South Florida expansion of the chain.
