ASX surges after RBA interest rate cut

The Australian sharemarket enjoyed a rate-fuelled boost on Tuesday, closing at a near seven-year high and stretching its winning streak to nine days, following the Reserve Bank of Australia's decision to ease monetary policy. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 surged 1.5 per cent, or 82.1 points, to 5707.4. It is the first time that the ASX 200 has closed above 5700 since June 2008.

Shares continue to climb as miners and energy stocks lead gains, with banks in support, while Kathmandu crashes on an earning update and JB Hi-Fi's profits dip. Oil has retraced some of Friday's gains , with the price of Brent crude falling $1.44, or 2.7 per cent, in Asian trade to $US51.55/barrel.

ASX Given New $37.00 Price Target at Deutsche Bank
