BlackBerry quarterly results show gradual improvement

2014-06-19 13:34:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) BlackBerry reported a small improvement in results for its fiscal first quarter to May, helped by its focus on cost reductions, cash flow and services. The company recorded a net profit of USD 23 million or 4 cents a share, versus a loss of USD 83 million a year ago, thanks to a one-time gain on debt valuation. Revenues were still down sharply compared to a year ago to USD 966 million versus USD 3.071 billion. Compared to the February quarter, revenues fell by only USD 10 million, and the company actually increased the number of handsets on which revenue was booked, to 1.6 million from 1.3 million smartphones in the previous quarter. This followed the launch of the Z3 device in Indonesia, which Blackberry said it will launch in another eight countries. Total handsets sold to end-customers, which includes those shipped in previous quarters, reached 2.2 million in Q1, as vendors cleared out inventories. Hardware made up only 39 percent of revenue in the quarter, while 54 percent came from services and 7 percent from software and other revenue. BlackBerry also reported a small increase in cash, to USD 3.1 billion from USD 2.7 billion at the end of February. The company's operational cash burn was USD 255 million in the first quarter, down from USD 784 million on the previous quarter, after a further reduction in costs. BlackBerry said it aims to maintain a strong cash position while "prudently" investing in growth opportunities. The group targets breakeven cash flow by the end of the fiscal year.

Telecom Italia sales fall 11.9% in Q1, eyes gradual recovery

2014-05-13 09:44:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia reported an 11.9 percent year-on-year fall in first-quarter revenues to EUR 5.19 billion, hurt by negative exchange rate effects in Brazil and a weaker domestic market. EBITDA declined 8.4 percent to EUR 2.20 billion, and EBITDA margin increased to 42.4 percent from 40.8 percent a year ago. Net profit dropped to EUR 222 million from EUR 364 million in the year-earlier period. Adjusted net debt came in at EUR 27.53 billion, slightly down on the figure of EUR 28.77 billion reported on 31 March 2013 but EUR 722 million higher than the EUR 26.81 billion reported in the previous quarter. Telecom Italia said the results were in line with its plans and confirmed expectations of a gradual recovery. "As a whole we are in line with our plans and targets, which see a progressive acceleration in year-on-year recovery," said CEO Marco Patuano. In his first 6 months as CEO, Patuano has sold Telecom Italia's Argentine unit, scrapped a dividend and announced the sale of wireless towers in Italy and Brazil. Last month he teamed up with Sky Italia on an IP-based TV service to attract broadband subscriptions. "The content agreement with Sky will allow us to immediately make premium offers available to our customers, starting with the broadcast of the FIFA World Cup on mobile devices," said Patuano.

What gradual climate warming could mean for Michigan tourism

2014-02-22 19:48:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Detroit Free Press: Using models based on 100 years of historical weather data, researchers at the University of Maryland in 2008 created climate projections to help gauge the economic impact of a changing environment on states throughout the country. Models predict a 5- to 10-degree increase in average temperatures and a 20 to 40 percent boost in precipitation. Despite the extra rainfall, Michigan would be drier because hotter temperatures would mean more evaporation. The Great Lakes would experience an increase...

Maryland opts for gradual Google Apps rollout

2014-01-22 13:26:34| InfoWorld: Top News

Adhering to the saying "be quick but don't hurry," the state of Maryland is in the midst of a three-and-a-half-year migration to Google Apps, saying the measured, deliberate rollout is a better approach than a big-bang implementation. The state chose Google Apps in 2011, after deciding it wanted a cloud email and collaboration suite to replace a variety of on-premises and heterogenous email systems across more than 50 agencies.
