Encana Corp. reported a loss in its latest quarter as its U.S. operations were hit by a big impairment charge related to the drop in commodity prices. The company, which keeps its books in U.S. dollars, says its loss attributable to shareholders totalled US$1.61 billion or $1.91 per share for the quarter ended June 30. The loss for the quarter included an after-tax $1.33-billion impairment charge as well as a $187-million after-tax hit related to an unrealized hedging loss.

US stocks fell for the third straight day on Thursday after disappointing corporate results and forecasts added to concerns about the US profit outlook. The Dow Jones industrial average fell back into the red for the year, with 3M, American Express and Caterpillar contributing the most to the average's fall.
Average US rate on 30-year mortgage falls to 4.04 percent

" Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates fell this week, retreating from highs for the year and amplifying the incentive for prospective home buyers. Mortgage giant Freddie Mac said Thursday the average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage declined to 4.04 percent from 4.09 percent a week earlier.
