Yahoo ad revenues shrink, profit grows on Alibaba stake

(Telecompaper) Yahoo reported growth in net profit thanks to its 24 percent stake in e-commerce portal Alibaba, but lower revenues in the second quarter, as it struggled to increase advertising turnover. Overall revenue shrank by 7 percent to USD 1.14 billion from USD 1.22 billion in the second quarter of 2012. Income from operations soared 150 percent to USD 137 million from USD 55 million, and net earnings per diluted share were 68 percent higher at USD 0.30 in the latest quarter, compared to USD 0.18 a year earlier. CEO Marissa Mayer said she was encouraged by Yahoo's second quarter performance. Yahoo expects to report USD 1.06 billion to USD 1.1 billion of revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs in the current quarter and USD 4.45 billion to USD 4.55 billion in the full year. Non-GAAP operating income USD 165 million to USD 185 million and USD 900 million to USD 1 billion, respectively.

Lenovo grows Q4 profit 90% to USD 127 million

(Telecompaper) Chinese PC and mobile device maker Lenovo reported sales up 4 percent to USD 7.8 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter to 31 March, compared to a year earlier. The company achieved market-beating PC shipments and smartphone sales increased by 3.7 on last year, according to chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing. Operating profit rose by 67 percent to USD 169 million and earnings increased by 90 percent to USD 127 million. The group will focus future investments on the tablets, smartphones and enterprise hardware, while working to enhance profitability in the core PC business.

SK Telecom's Q1 profit grows 15% on SK Hynix contribution

(Telecompaper) Korean communications provider SK Telecom recorded a first quarter net income of KRW 346 billion, up 15 percent from KRW 300 billion in the year-ago period as positive earnings from SK Hynix contributed to pre-tax profits. Operating revenues went up 4 percent to KRW 4.11 trillion from KRW 3.97 trillion a year earlier, due to growth in the LTE subscriber base, new businesses including B2B solutions, and the merger of SK M&C with SK Planet. However, EBITDA slipped 1 percent to KRW 1.09 trillion while EBITDA margin fell to 26.6 percent from 27.9 percent in Q1 2012.

China Unicom grows FY net profit 68.5%

(Telecompaper) China Unicom reported revenue of CNY 248.93 billion for 2012, up 19.0 percent from 2011. The operator's EBITDA rose 14.6 percent to CNY 72.66 billion, and EBITDA as a percentage of service revenue was up 0.5 percent points to 34.6 percent. Net profit reached CNY 7.10 billion, up by 68.5 percent year-on-year. Growth was led by its mobile activities, with service revenues up 22.0 percent to CNY 126.04 billion, and the customer base increasing 19.9 percent to 239.31 million. 3G's share of total mobile subscribers reached 31.9 percent, up by 11.9 percentage points, and 3G accounted for 47.4 percent of mobile service revenue. Mobile data volume increased by 92.0 percent year-on-year, and China Unicom said 3G smartphone users were now averaging 256 MB per month. Mobile ARPU was up just 1.3 percent to CNY 47.9, despite higher MOU and SMS traffic as well. Fixed service revenues were up by just 1.9 percent in 2012 to CNY 83.21 billion, of which 70.0 percent from non-voice services. Broadband subscribers grew by 14.8 percent, and broadband service revenue rose 11.8 percent to CNY 39.37 billion. The operator added 92,000 3G base stations last year for a total 331,000, all offering HSPA at up to 21Mbps. Fixed-line broadband access ports increased by 23.9 percent to 106.46 million, of which 59 percent were FTTH/B, up by 14 percentage points from 2011. After capex of CNY 99.79 billion in 2012, China Unicom said it aims to lower the capex-to-sales ratio this year, while maintaining revenue growth and further improving profitability.
