China Mobile's H1 revenue grows 5%, profit up 3.5%; offers special dividend

(Telecompaper) China Mobile posted operating revenue of CNY 388.9 billion for the first six months of 2017, which represents an increase of 5 percent from the year-earlier period. EBITDA reached CNY 140.7 billion, up 4.7 percent in the period, while profit rose 3.5 percent year-on-year to CNY 62.7 billion in the first half of 2017.  The company's board has declared payment of a one-off special dividend of HKD 3.200 per share in celebration of the group's 20th anniversary on the stock market.

Softbank quarterly revenue up 2.8%, opg profit grows on Sprint improvement

(Telecompaper) Net income plunged 88.8 percent to JPY 30.5 billion in the quarter, due mainly to financial and derivative losses related to the company's stake in Alibaba. Operating income amounted to JPY 479.2 billion, which represents an increase of 50.1 percent year-on-year, due largely to the inclusion of the new Softbank investment fund. Excluding the Softbank Vision Fund, operating profit was up 17.2 percent to JPY 374.0 billion, led by growth at Sprint and Yahoo Japan.

Tele2 Q3 grows revenues but profit hit by Dutch impairment

(Telecompaper) Tele2 reported third quarter revenues up slightly to SEK 6.961 billion from 6.791 billion the year before, driven by growth in Sweden, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan and the Baltics. Group mobile end-user service revenue lifted 6 percent, with record revenue in Sweden. Group EBITDA slid to SEK 1.562 billion from 1.599 billion, with the margin off to 22 percent from 24 percent, affected by costs associated with the commercial push in the Netherlands following the launch of LTE there. The net result went to a loss of SEK 2.266 billion from a gain of 397 million, hit by an impairment of goodwill in the Netherlands.

Canadian Tire Q4 profit grows despite impact from weather, economy, fuel prices

Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. overcame a number of negative factors to grow its profit in its fourth quarter, including lower prices for the gasoline it sells and unusually warm weather that depressed sales of some seasonal products, especially at its Mark's clothing chain. The Toronto-based company had $241.5 million or $3.01 per share of net income in the quarter ended Jan. 2. That was up about 17 per cent from $206.6 million or $2.44 per share a year earlier, when several expenses were higher.

Ericsson grows net profit 68% in Q4

(Telecompaper) Ericsson reported a strong improvement in fourth-quarter profits, supported by cost reductions and modest sales growth. Net profit jumped 68 percent to SEK 7.0 billion or SEK 2.15 per share, and operating profit was up 75 percent year-on-year to SEK 11.0 billion. Sales increased 8 percent from a year earlier to SEK 73.6 billion. The company reduced its operating costs by around 10 percent year-on-year in the second half of 2015, as part of its target to achieve SEK 9 billion in savings by 2017. In addition, higher revenues from IP licensing helped boost margins. After more than doubling operating cash flow in Q4, Ericsson raised its dividend by 9 percent to SEK 3.70 per share.
