Duke Energy has asked Florida regulators to allow it to issue $1.3 billion worth of a new type of securitized bond designed to reduce charges to customers for the costs of shutting down the damaged Crystal River nuclear plant . Duke projects using the securitized bonds approved by the Florida Legislature this year to help address the Crystal River costs will save customers in the state about $790 million over the next 20 years.

Duke Energy Renewables has purchased the development rights for two southern California solar projects with a total capacity of 50 megawatts. When the projects are completed, likely in December, Duke will have 116 megawatts of solar capacity in the state.

Duke Energy snaps up another solar project

Duke Energy Corp. , through its division that deals with renewable energy sources, has purchased a 20-megawatt solar project in northeastern North Carolina from Ecoplexus Inc. The Charlotte-based utility did not disclose financial details in its news release this week . The project, located in the Currituck County town of Shawboro, generates enough electricity to power 4,000 homes and has a 15-year agreement in place to sell that energy to Dominion North Carolina Power, a subsidiary of Richmond, Va.-based Dominion Resources Inc. .
