Australia merges blazes in wildfire battle to prevent 'megafire'
2013-10-22 00:55:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Agence France-Presse: Firefighters on Tuesday deliberately merged two major blazes in southeastern Australia in a desperate battle to manage the advancing infernos as weather conditions worsen. Crews made up largely of volunteers worked through the night along trails in heavily forested areas west of Sydney to try to prevent the fires becoming one out-of-control "megafire" that could race towards a third blaze nearby. Climate Change Worsens Wildfires: Blazes Increase by 2050
2013-08-30 13:13:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Science World Report: Wildfires have become a major issue as they blaze across acres of land, consuming trees, dry grass, houses and anything else in their path. We may have to get used to more of these fires in the future, though. It turns out that climate change may be worsening wildfires and that by 2050, the wildfire season will be about three weeks longer, twice as smoky and will burn a wider area in western states. As Arizona fire rages, scientists warn of more unpredictable blazes
2013-07-03 07:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
LA Times: Early morning is a frenetic time at a wildfire command post. Biologists, meteorologists, foresters and firefighters hustle into tents and grab laptops to review overnight reports, prepping for the day's assault. Fire behavior analysts run computer models that spit out information crucial to putting out the blaze: how many acres a fire will probably burn, in which direction and with what intensity. In recent years, the models have been rendered practically obsolete, unable to project how erratic...
