Climate simulations show effects of releasing permafrost carbon
2016-08-30 07:46:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Ars Technica: During the last deglaciation, between roughly 21,000 and 10,000 years ago, there was a rise in atmospheric carbon. This surge brought CO2 levels up to where they were in preindustrial times and contributed to the warming that ended the glacial period. But there's a significant item missing from this picture: we don't know where the carbon came from. Researchers had suggested that changes in the distribution of ice, driven by alterations in Earth's orbit and tilt, altered the oceans capacity to...

A step forward in the research of alcohol's effects on health and disease? - International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research Critique 191
2016-08-25 16:34:00| Daily beverage news and comment - from just-drinks.com
Observational epidemiologic studies relating alcohol consumption to health and disease have been remarkably consistent over many decades: light to moderate alcohol intake is related to improved cardiovascular health and less diabetes, while heavy intake and binge drinking relate primarily to adverse cardiovascular and other disease outcomes.

Volcanic eruptions can 'mask the true effects of climate change'
2016-08-10 11:07:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Wired: Recent reports that suggest sea levels aren't rising as fast as expected and may even be dropping could be inaccurate, according to new research. Experts from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) have discovered that the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines could have masked the true reading, and this could have dire consequences for the future. Satellite observations, which began in 1993, show that the rate of sea level rise has held fairly steady at about 3 millimeters...

Ajilon Technology Aerospace is looking for a Technician E2 Space Environmental Effects Testing Engineer Support E2 for an opportunity at the European Space Agency in the Netherlands Ajilon Technology Aerospace is a specialised Engineering consultancy with more than 30 years experience providing aerospace Engineers to our key partners in The Netherlands. Ajilon is a longstanding business partner of the European Space Agency ESA, with more than 100 employees recruited from across Europe currently supporting ESAs activities. General tasks to be performed Main activity is to support practical laboratory work. Providing assistance, prepare and execute test activities in the laboratory and supporting in the following areas To set up and monitor standard, materials related tests in a variety of special environmental test chambers particularly Atomic Oxygen and Low Orbit tests, which simulate various space environments. Operating state of the art space simulation facilities UV and particles as well as synergistic testing and evaluation of the effects on materials tested. Performing common materials analysis investigations like microscopic spectroscopic analysis after space simulation. Performing surface and near surface sensitive characterisation of materials after space environmental simulation. This requires the operation of state of the art instruments like Raman, ESCA, NMR and ESR facilities. Improving test procedures and ensuring that these are executed correctly. Design and perform nonstandard tests to meet special space project requirements as well as develop in situ analysis techniques. Traceability of test exposure conditions and follows the effect of the exposure on samples. Recording sample properties or condition during and after test, accurately and legibly. Checking on test equipment performance and reporting any anomalies or faults. Producing clear and professional reports in English as specified for the task. Supporting the inclusion of results in internal databases. Maintenance of the relevant test equipment. The Contractor shall ensure that the equipment under his responsibility is kept in an operational state and shall ensure that all necessary routine calibration and maintenance activities are carried out. To successfully perform the above mentioned tasks, the following background experience is required Technician level in Materials Technology with demonstrated laboratory work experience. Materials science with a good working knowledge of materials process technology, a good understanding of physics and minimal two years of practical experience in a controlled test environment. A good understanding of metallography, optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and mechanical testing is a specific asset The holder of the post shall speakwrite English with a technical working level, with several years of experience in material physical and chemical laboratory investigations. Experience and knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems in a laboratory environment. Motivated to realise new experimental setup in a timely manner Be able to summarise testing activities in technical reports Able to read mechanical drawings Electrical basic knowledge Mechanical basic knowledge Knowledge in vacuum technology would be an asset About ESAESTEC The European Space Agency ESA has sites in several European countries. The European Space Research and Technology Centre ESTEC is the largest site and the technical heart of ESA. This nursery of European space activities is located in Noordwijk, Netherlands. At ESTEC, about 2500 engineers, technicians and scientists work handson with mission design, spacecraft and space technology. Almost all ESA projects except launchers are managed from ESTEC. In Noordwijk, people work on science missions, manned space missions, Earth observation, telecommunications and navigation satellites. ESTEC provides extensive testing facilities to verify the proper operation of spacecraft, such as the Large Space Simulator LSS, acoustic and electromagnetic testing bays, multiaxis vibration tables and the ESA Propulsion Laboratory EPL.
