Keryx drug for dialysis patients poised to challenge Genzyme

Greg Madison assumed the role of COO at Keryx Biopharmaceuticals in February, and today he oversees the 50-employee Boston office. With the its newly-approved drug for kidney dialysis patients now being shipped and available to be prescribed, Keryx Biopharmaceuticals is poised to take on one of Genzyme's drugs with sales of about $600 million.

Vertex cystic fibrosis drug approved for another 500 U.S. patients

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Kalydeco by Vertex Pharmaceuticals for use in about 500 more cystic fibrosis patients than previously. Kalydeco is the Boston pharmaceutical company's only approved drug, following it's decision last year to discontinue its hepatitis C drug due to competition.

Purdue gets $1.6M to create virtual patients

Purdue University has received a $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to help medical, nursing and pharmacy students learn how to counsel people to quit smoking using "virtual patients" and educational assessments. Hudmon says tobacco use is the primary known preventable cause of disease and death in the United States and results in enormous health care costs.

Investigational drug increases PFS in patients with advanced breast cancer

In a groundbreaking study that offers new hope for women with advanced breast cancer, researchers from UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have published final clinical trial results that showed the amount of time patients were on treatment without their cancer worsening was effectively doubled in women with advanced breast cancer who took the experimental drug palbociclib. An investigational drug discovered and being developed by Pfizer Inc., palbociclib targets a key family of proteins responsible for cell growth by preventing them from dividing.

The Wall Street Journal: Merck drug shrank tumors in some breast cancer patients in trial

A Merck & Co. drug shrank tumors in about 18.5% of women with an aggressive form of breast cancer in a small clinical trial, an early sign of the potential of immunotherapy to treat breast tumors.
