Chipmaker Qualcomm Inc has sold its U.K. spectrum rights to Vodafone Group Plc and CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd for about 200 million pounds, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The deal, which is to be announced Wednesday, is subject to approval by communications regulator Ofcom, Bloomberg cited three people as saying.

Russia's Vimpelcom and Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa are close to a deal to merge their Italian mobile phone businesses, sources close to the deal said. A deal would help end a long and costly price war among local mobile operators in Europe's fourth-largest telecoms market.

(Telecompaper) Hutchison Whampoa and VimpelCom have released statements confirming negotiations to merge their respective Italian mobile phone units, 3 Italia and Wind Telecomunicazioni. "We are in discussions with Hutchison regarding a possible equal joint venture between 3 Italia SpA and Vimpelcom's subsidiary Wind Telecommunicazioni SpA," said VimpelCom, adding that "there can be no assurances that an agreement will be signed and any transaction would be subject to, among other things, achieving satisfactory debt levels and obtaining all required corporate and regulatory approvals." Hutchison also issued a statement to inform shareholders and investors about "exploratory negotiations with VimpelCom". The companies have been holding on-off talks since December 2013, with Wind's net debt level and the exact split of ownership representing the main hurdles to a deal.

Hutchison Whampoa sells third of 3-O2 UK to investors

(Telecompaper) Hutchison Whampoa, parent of mobile operator 3, announced that it has entered into agreements with five institutional investors who will acquire stakes totalling 33 percent in the combined businesses of 3 UK and O2 UK for a total consideration of GBP 3.1 billion. The investors are Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, GIC of Singapore, Limpart Holdings (a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority), CDPQ of Quebec and BTG Pactual of Brazil. Their investments are conditional on and will occur concurrently with completion by 3 of the acquisition of O2 UK from Telefonica, which is in turn subject to European Commission approval. The full proceeds of their investments will be used, together with a committed bank facility of GBP 6 billion, to fund the acquisition of O2 UK.
