Feb 24 South Africa will explore merging two of its state-owned airlines, South African Airways and SA Express, and seek a minority equity partner for the company, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said on Wednesday. Many of South Africa's 300-odd state entities are a drain on the government's purse and a team commissioned by President Jacob Zuma to review the companies recommended that some companies should be sold.

Reuters: South Africa's worst drought in over a century has pushed around 50,000 below the poverty line, the World Bank said on Wednesday. "Around 50,000 people, we estimate, have been pushed below the national poverty line of 501 rand ($31.68) a month because of the drought," Catriona Purfield, program leader for South Africa told a parliamentary committee.
