Improving poor soil with burned up biomass

2016-06-19 18:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: Science in Japan have shown that torrefied biomass can improve the quality of poor soil found in arid regions. Published in Scientific Reports, the study showed that adding torrefied biomass to poor soil from Botswana increased water retention in the soil as well as --the amount of plant growth. When high temperatures and the absence of oxygen are used to bring about the decomposition of biomass residue from agricultural products such as grains, the result is a charcoal-rich substance called biochar....

Study unlocks surprising behaviour of soil bacteria

2016-06-17 13:54:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Newly sequenced genomes of soil bacteria have raised questions about how differing land management affects the organisms' behaviour. UK scientists found one strain locked nitrogen in the soil, while another released a potent greenhouse gas. The findings came to light after the researchers sequenced Bradyrhizobium, one of the most active and abundant groups of soil bacteria. The findings were published recently in the journal Scientific Reports. The team from the University of Reading...
