Gathering of soil samples on residential properties in the Houghton Plot neighborhood is approximately 70 percent complete, a DEC spokesperson said Friday. DEC Region 8 spokeswoman Linda Vera said deep soil samples are complete and the first phase of surface samples have been gathered at residential properties in an area believed to be near a former manufacturing waste dump.

A Benton Township farmer can breathe a sigh of relief now that tests have revealed no soil or water contamination from a major gas leak last week. The owner of the gas line, TransCanada says the soil and water samples from the land where the pipe ruptured last Tuesday came back clean.
