Majority of EU operators support wholesale roaming caps

2016-05-04 14:41:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) A majority of mobile operators and MVNOs in the EU think it will not be possible to implement 'roam like at home' pricing under the current wholesale roaming regulations. Only 34 percent of MNOs and no MNVOs that responded to the European Commission's consultation on wholesale roaming said it would be possible to implement RLAH without a change to wholesale regulations. Just over half (53%) of all providers see a need for a change in regulation before the deadline of June 2017 to end all roaming surcharges in the EU. The consultation ended in February attracted responses from a majority of MNOs and independent MVNOs in the EU and Norway, the EC said in a detailed report summarising the comments. There was a clear split in opinions about the competitiveness of the roaming market, with larger operators with more inbound traffic tending to think it works under the current conditions, while smaller operators with more outbound traffic saying wholesale rates are too high to cover costs. A majority of the respondents want to the EU to continue with the wholesale roaming price caps, but operators are dividend on what the new prices should be.

Mobile operators call for EU action on wholesale roaming

2016-05-03 16:17:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) A group of smaller mobile operators and MVNOs have called on the EU to work faster on reducing wholesale roaming prices if it wants to achieve the goal of 'roam like home' across the union by June 2017. The roaming coalition, which includes operators such as 3, Free and Play as well as industry group MVNO Europe covering together nearly 70 million customers, welcomed the cut from 30 April of retail roaming prices. However, they see a need for a sharp reduction in the current wholesale roaming price caps in order to allow smaller operators to compete. In particular, wholesale data roaming prices need to come down from the current "unjustifiably" high level above domestic wholesale rates in many countries. The group said the European Commission will need to come up with a legislative proposal by June if it's to complete the process by the deadline of 15 June 2017 for an end to all roaming surcharges. The European Commission has already held a public consultation on wholesale roaming and has said it aims to come with a proposal by June.
