Whirlpool officials said Friday they have paid more than $3 million to property owners harmed by pollution around the company's former manufacturing plant in Fort Smith, and have settled claims with all but two property owners near the plant. The company closed the refrigerator manufacturing plant in June 2012, and later that year it was made public that trichloroethyclene - a cancer-causing chemical - was found in and around the plant.

Polar bears weakened by pollution as well as warmth
2015-04-17 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Daily Climate: Greenlands polar bears have a thyroid problem. Their endocrine systems, too, are being disrupted. In both cases the culprit agency is environmental pollution by a range of long-lived industrial chemicals and pesticides. Kristin Mller Gabrielsen of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and colleagues report in the journal Environmental Research that they examined the liver, muscle and kidney tissues taken from seven polar bears killed by Inuit hunters in East Greenland...

Emissions across nearly all sectors grew in 2013, with increased GHG emissions from electricity generation, more...

Exxon: $8.9B sought in New Jersey pollution case 'not real'
2015-04-16 00:07:13| Oil & Gas - Topix.net
Exxon Mobil's top lawyer said Wednesday that a heavily criticized $225 million pollution settlement with New Jersey was reasonable and that the nearly $9 billion initially sought by the state shouldn't be used as a barometer because it was calculated using faulty methodology. The settlement announced in March has drawn criticism from environmentalists and lawmakers in both parties who have said the state should have waited for a judge's ruling instead of settling for what they have a characterized as pennies on the dollar.
