Yahoo! Q1 revenues up 8% on expansion in search
2015-04-22 08:35:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Yahoo reported higher first-quarter results, led by expansion in the search market. Total revenues rose 8 percent to USD 1.226 billion, with a 2 percent increase in display to USD 464 million and a 20 percent jump in search to USD 532 million. Yahoo attributed the increase to its search agreement with Mozilla, as well as a 61 percent increase in mobile revenue to USD 234 million. Its search volume also reached a five-year high in the quarter. Revenues excluding traffic acquisition costs were down slightly to USD 1.043 billion versus USD 1.087 billion a year earlier, and adjusted EBITDA fell to USD 231 million from USD 306 million. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said the figures were in line with expectations, with GAAP revenue growing ahead of revenue ex-TAC and EBITDA. "For the next phase of the transformation, we will focus on accelerating our GAAP revenue growth while managing our margins and costs," she said. Net earnings in Q1 totaled USD 21 million or 2 cents a share, down from USD 312 million or 29 cents a share a year ago. The company's cash position fell to USD 6.9 billion from USD 10.2 billion at the end of 2014, after it spent USD 204 million on repurchasing shares and paid USD 3.3 billion in tax on its sale of shares in Alibaba.

Yahoo! revises search agreement with Microsoft
2015-04-16 16:39:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Yahoo! announced an extension to its search agreement with Microsoft, under new conditions. Under the ten-year agreement signed in 2009 to use Microsoft's search services, Yahoo had the right to request changes mid-way through the deal. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said in a statement that she worked closely with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on amending the agreement so that the company can "enhance our user experience and innovate more in our search business". Under the new terms, Yahoo will have increased flexibility notably in the mobile market, where it has been working to improve its market position. The company will be able to change its search experience on any platform, as the partnership is non-exclusive for both desktop and mobile. Yahoo will continue to serve Bing ads and search results for a majority of its desktop search traffic. In addition, the companies are dividing up ad sales, so Microsoft will become the exclusive seller of ads delivered by its Bing Ads platform. Yahoo will hold on to sales over its own Gemini ads platform. The main licensing terms of the agreement remain the same: Microsoft pays Yahoo a percentage of Bing Ads revenue delivered from Yahoo searches.

Yahoo to close Beijing research centre, lay off employees
2015-03-19 08:25:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Yahoo is closing its research and development centre in Beijing as part of its drive to consolidate some jobs into fewer offices, the South China Morning Post reported. The centre employs around 350 people, mostly engineers and scientists. Layoffs will begin at the end of the month, sources said. A Yahoo spokesperson confirmed the move, saying employees in Beijng have been informed. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company will lay off 200-300 employees. Sources say the decision to close the Beijing office was not caused by issues related to censorship or pressure from the Chinese government. Yahoo stopped offering services to users in China in 2013. That year, it told email users to transfer their accounts to Alimail, an email service offered by Yahoo partner Alibaba. The Chinese address for its home page, Yahoo.cn, is redirecting visitors to the Singapore site.
