Agrium Inc. is increasing its quarterly dividend four per cent despite reporting a 26 per cent decline in net earnings to US$50 million or 35 cents per diluted share. The Calgary-based global producer and marketer of fertilizer says the payout will rise to 78 cents US per common share beginning Jan. 21 to shareholders of record on Dec. 31. San Francisco-based fund ValueAct Capital has discloses to U.S. regulators that it has acquired a 5.7 per cent stake in Calgary fertilizer producer Agrium Inc. . In its 13D document, required whenever an investor buys more than five per cent of a company's shares, ValueAct does not specify whether it wants to see any changes at Agrium, saying only that the purchases were made in its "ordinary course of business" and for "investment purposes."

Agrium to expand Canada potash mine by fourth quarter

Canadian fertilizer company Agrium Inc. expects to complete expansion of its Vanscoy, Saskatchewan, potash mine in the fourth quarter, the company said in an investor presentation on Tuesday. Agrium said it expected to ramp up production at the mine, which expands to 3 million tonnes annually from 2 million, by 2017.
