As part of its ongoing efforts to develop an acceptable unleaded fuel for small airplanes, FAA has selected two unleaded fuels for further testing, helping general aviation community eliminate reliance on leaded fuel. Fuel formulations from Shell and Swift Fuels were selected for Phase 2 engine and aircraft testing. Test data will help companies obtain ASTM International Production Specification for their fuels and allow FAA to authorize existing GA fleet to use unleaded replacement fuels.

FAA Receives Unleaded Fuels Proposals

FAA received 10 replacement fuel proposals from producers Afton Chemical Company, Avgas LLC, Shell, and Swift Fuels as well as consortium of BP, TOTAL, and Hjelmco for further evaluation in Piston Aviation Fuels Initiative (PAFI), which aims to help general aviation industry transition to unleaded aviation gasoline. FAA will assess viability of candidate fuels to determine for participation in first phase of laboratory testing at William J. Hughes Technical Center. FAA Requests Proposals for Options to Help General Aviation Transition to Unleaded Fuels

FAA has asked world's fuel producers to submit proposals for fuel options that would help general aviation (GA) industry make transition to unleaded fuel. FAA will assess viability of candidate fuels in terms of their impact on existing fleet, their production and distribution infrastructure, their impact on environment and toxicology, and economic considerations.
