After years of enduring spiralling operating costs Canada's oil and gas industry is being hit by price deflation, as producers push to share the pain of low crude prices with contractors, service providers and suppliers Lower costs have eased some of the bite from slumping oil prices for producers who have seen profit dive over the last six months. But there is no silver lining for the hundreds of oilfield service providers - ranging from drillers to well service firms to trucking companies - that are having to jostle for business by dropping prices and renegotiating contracts.

Rail strike in Canada may disrupt varied businesses across continent

About 3,000 locomotive engineers and conductors at the Canadian Pacific Railway walked off the job Sunday morning in a dispute over wages and benefits. Although the company said it would try to maintain some service by using managers, the strike is likely to disrupt major industries throughout North America, including automakers, oil companies, paper businesses, lumber suppliers and agriculture and mining companies.

Canada asks for WTO tribunal to help resolve wood-pulp trade dispute with China

The federal government is seeking a World Trade Organization tribunal to help resolve a dispute over China's move to slap duties on Canadian wood-pulp exports. Last fall, Ottawa filed a complaint with the WTO over Chinese levies on Canadian dissolving pulp, which is used to make rayon for clothing and other products.
