Massive Iceberg Calves Off Antarcticas Pine Island Glacier

2013-07-10 19:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Yale Environment 360: A massive chunk of Antarcticas fastest-moving ice stream, the Pine Island Glacier, dropped into the Amundsen Sea this week, nearly two years after scientists first observed a crack in the glacier tongue.German scientists, who have been tracking the progress of the ice mass since NASA satellites first observed the crack in October, 2011, say the calved iceberg measured 720 square kilometers (278 square miles), or about the size of the city of Hamburg. There is no conclusive proof that climate change...

Huge iceberg calves off Antarctic glacier

2013-07-10 16:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: An iceberg half the size of Greater London has calved off Pine Island glacier in the Antarctic. This week a radar instrument on the German satellite TerraSAR-X captured an image of a crack having grown to extend across the entire ice shelf at the front of the glacier since 2011. Scientists say that the 720-sqkm iceberg calved off in a natural event unrelated to the effects of global warming. Andy Smith of the British Antarctic Survey said: "Although there's nothing to suggest this event is...

Antarctic's Pine Island glacier produces giant iceberg

2013-07-10 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Pine Island Glacier (PIG), the longest and fastest flowing glacier in the Antarctic, has spawned a huge iceberg. The block measures about 720 sq km in area - roughly eight times the size of Manhattan Island in New York. Scientists have been waiting for the PIG to calve since October 2011 when they first noticed a spectacular crack spreading across its surface. Confirmation that the fissure had extended the full width of the glacier was obtained on Monday. It was seen by the German TerraSAR-X...

The effect of climate change on iceberg production by Greenland glaciers

2013-05-13 02:05:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

SPX: While the impact of climate change on the surface of the Greenland ice sheet has been widely studied, a clear understanding of the key process of iceberg production has eluded researchers for many years. Published in Nature this week, a new study presents a sophisticated computer model that provides a fresh insight into the impact of climate change on the production of icebergs by Greenland glaciers, and reveals that the shape of the ground beneath the ice has a strong effect on its movement....

Shell's rig failure the tip of the iceberg for Arctic drilling?

2013-01-10 01:00:00| Offshore Technology

The recent grounding of Shell's drill ship in Alaska has added fuel to fears that offshore operations in the Arctic may be too risky. And while the Obama administration has supported Arctic offshore drilling in the past, the tables may be about to tu
