“It may be that the worst is behind the market as it relates to heavy cattle (fed), but heavy cattle and slower beef demand is not the only thing weighing on finished cattle prices,” says Andrew P. Griffith, agricultural economist at the University of Tennessee, in his weekly market comments (Oct. 9). “Hide and offal values have declined $3.64/cwt. since the beginning of the year and are about 28 percent lower than a year ago. This is a significant loss to the total value of a finished animal and may continue to weigh on the market.”

Company recalls a half million pounds of chicken

Sanderson Farms is recalling more than a half million pounds of chicken and other poultry products due to possible contamination, according to a bulletin issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service on Friday. The voluntary recall affects approximately 554,090 pounds of chicken produced between September 17-18, 2015.

Over the past year, we've read about chicken sausage contaminated with plastic , bread containing broken glass , and mac 'n' cheese that had metal bits in it . The latest? Mississippi-based Sanderson Farms is voluntarily recalling over half a million pounds of chicken products, the USDA announced September 24. The reason? Metal strikes again! According to the press release, 554,090 pounds were recalled after a processing facility discovered metal shavings in the product.
