Arrium will cut jobs and overhaul operating practices at its Whyalla steel works in South Australia to save $100 million as the company rolls ahead with an auction for its prized mining consumables business. The embattled steel, mining, and materials group said on Thursday that it is seeking an additional $100 million of cost savings in its steel arm, OneSteel, on top of $60 million of previously announced cost savings from the group.

A Kentucky woman has died of what police say appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and another person was injured in a shooting at a ConAgra Foods plant. Princeton police said in a news release Wednesday that 37-year-old Nellie Renee Nichols of Dawson Springs went to the factory to confront her mother and began firing from a semi-automatic pistol.

food pantry to receive $10,000 from Hormel plant

The New Berlin food pantry will receive a $10,000 donation Wednesday from Mexican Accent, the local manufacturing plant owned by the Hormel Foods Corp. The donation will be part of the Hormel Foods Plant Community Donations Program, which gives employees the opportunity to assist local hunger relief organizations and strengthen the communities where they live and work. This is the fifth consecutive year that Hormel Foods has given funds to U.S. manufacturing facilities to share with nonprofit agencies in their respective communities to fight hunger.
