Intel seeks to boost CPU speed by 5 times in chip for tablets, smartphones
2013-11-22 14:20:47| InfoWorld: Top News
Intel will release new Atom chips for smartphones and tablets next year as it chases a goal of boosting mobile chip graphics performance by 15 times and CPU performance by five times by 2016. The 64-bit Atom chips are based on new CPU and graphics cores and will likely appear in smartphones and devices starting in 2015. The new lineup boasts two high-performance mobile chips and the first Atom chip with an integrated modem, which will be for low-priced entry-level devices.
Intel targets mobile growth, flat sales expected in 2014
2013-11-22 10:15:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Intel has forecast flat sales in 2014, as the chipmaker struggles to grow in the mobile market in order to offset the slowdown in PCs. At an investor meeting, CFO Stacy Smith said the PC market, measured in units, is expected to be down in the "low single-digit" percent next year still. The company expects its gross margin to remain in its target range of 55-65 percent, and capital spending in 2014 will be little changed from 2013 at around USD 11 billion, Bloomberg reported. Investments aimed at enabling customers to convert to Intel chips in tablets will hurt total profitability, the CFO said. CEO Brian Krzanich said the company needs to speed up the delivery of new products for mobile devices. In the tablet market, the company plans to ship more than 40 million tablet chips, representing about 15 percent of the tablet market, up from 10 million in 2013, the Financial Times reported from the meeting. Krzanich unveiled plans for a new chip, known as SoFIA, aimed at low-end tablets. As Intel invests in capacity to make the new mobile products, the company is developing plans to share some of its manufacturing facilities with other producers. William Holt, head of technology and manufacturing, said the company is opening up foundry capacity to compete with groups such as TSMC and GlobalFoundries.

Intel rushes to exascale with redesigned supercomputing chip
2013-11-19 19:19:46| InfoWorld: Top News
In the rush to exascale computing, Intel is making a small change that could have a big impact on system design with its upcoming Xeon Phi chip. Intel on Tuesday promised big performance and power improvements with the redesigned chip, code-named Knights Landing, which analysts said could ship next year or 2015. The chip will also have interconnect and memory advances, Intel has said, that could separate it from other co-processors like graphics processors, which are widely used to accelerate technical computing.
