Victory over patent for breast cancer gene
2015-10-16 03:23:36| Biotech - Topix.net
Queensland pensioner and grandmother, 69-year-old Yvonne D'Arcy, who has twice beaten breast cancer, won an important victory in the High Court on October 7. D'Arcy brought a landmark legal challenge against US-based biotech company Myriad Genetics after it was granted a patent over the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Mutations in the genes dramatically increase a woman's chance of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Breast cancer gene judgment opens up complex questions
2015-10-09 20:07:22| Biotech - Topix.net
This week saw a major victory for cancer patients and advocates who fought to regain control of their genes. But in the fast-changing world of medical research, who will own the rights to future discoveries? The High Court ruling against patenting BRCA1 means Myriad Genetics no longer own the mutation test and scientists outside the company will be able to extend research into the breast cancer gene, explains health editor Amy Corderoy.

Researchers identify new gene locus that may protect children from developing malaria in Africa
2015-10-01 16:28:38| Biotech - Topix.net
Published today in Nature , the findings detail a new gene locus that can explain why, in communities where everyone is constantly exposed to malaria, some children develop severe malaria and others don't. Now, researchers can be sure that this particular stretch of our DNA plays a crucial role in the progression of the disease.
