Peter Botten says any investment in Santos assets in PNG will be carefully considered and the price must be right. Oil Search is eyeing some of Santos' assets in Papua New Guinea for potential acquisition, including its stake in the $US19 billion PNG LNG project, as it looks to take advantage of its balance sheet and the low oil price environment to add high-quality assets in its home market.

Santos is close to finalising a deal with energy giant ExxonMobil Corporation to acquire a stake in the P'nyang gas field in Papua New Guinea, as the joint venture partners eye a lucrative expansion of the $US19 billion PNG LNG venture. The Adelaide-based oil and gas producer is understood to have concluded talks with Exxon, the operator of PNG LNG, over taking a 10 per cent to 15 per cent stake in the field alongside partners Exxon, Oil Search and JX Nippon, according to sources close to the deal.

Oil Search may sell down part of its stake in the P'nyang gas field in Papua New Guinea to Santos in a move that will give the Adelaide-based company a more lucrative role in a planned expansion of the $US19 billion PNG LNG venture. Santos, which already holds a 13.5 per cent stake in PNG LNG, said in May it was working on a potential deal that would give it a stake in the P'nyang gas field alongside existing partners ExxonMobil, Oil Search and JX Nippon, while declining to reveal any specific details.
Santos credit rating safe for now, says Standard & Poor's

Santos is in no immediate danger of a further cut to its credit rating despite last month's downgrading of crude oil prices, Standard & Poor's has declared. But S&P senior director Craig Parker said moves Santos had already taken to cut spending and add $1 billion of debt funding has put it on the way to achieving the financial ratios it needs for its negative outlook to be removed.
