Canada's Energy Sector Taps Bitumen, Sticky Rival to Oil Sands

2013-07-08 06:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: Pilot projects in an as-yet undeveloped oilfield could remake Canada's energy map, if producers can successfully wrest a sludgy, tarry substance called bitumen from porous rock in remote northern Alberta. The bitumen in the caverns and cracks of the dolomite and limestone rock is a vast resource, estimated by Alberta regulators to hold close to 500 billion barrels of oil, or more than the combined recoverable oil reserves of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, the world's top two oil states. The bitumen,...

Enbridges tar sands pipelines

2013-07-07 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Living on Earth: CURWOOD: In his recent address on climate change, President Obama pledged not to approve the Keystone XL pipeline if it would add significantly to global warming. Many Keystone opponents heard that as a death-knell for the project, but the overall climate impact of the pipeline will depend on whether the diluted bitumen, dilbit, from the Canadian Tar Sands would be able to get to the market anyway. And there may be another way. According to the online publication InsideClimateNews, the Enbridge Company...

CBC: Oilsands mixed with water has leaked in northeastern Alberta. The Alberta Energy Regulator says Canadian Natural Resources Limited reported Monday that bitumen emulsion has been released on the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range. The regulator put out a news release about it on Thursday. Regulator spokesman Bob Curran says it's not clear how much has leaked or what caused the release from CNRL's high-pressure cyclic steam project. Curran says the oilsands mixture has affected a nearby slough....

Obama Has a Plan for Climate, What If It Involves Tar Sands?

2013-06-26 17:15:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Scientific American: "You see, I've got this plan..." ... On a sweltering day in Washington, D.C., President Barack Obama sweated as he laid out his new plan to combat climate change. In addition to the mandatory cuts in CO2 pollution from coal-fired power plants and the efforts to protect the country from the ravages of climate change highlighted by my colleague Mark Fischetti, Obama also found time to mention a little pipeline that would connect the tar sands in Alberta, Canada with refineries along the Gulf Coast...
