Gas Stations Close as Fire Rages Near Alberta Oil Sands

2016-06-14 04:36:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Triple Pundt: The wildfire that roared through Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, last May has been called the worst fire in Canadian history. Its devastation is staggering: More than 100,000 residents and nearby workers were evacuated at different stages of the fire, and more than 2,200 square miles of land and 2,400 structures burned in two provinces: Alberta and its eastern neighbor, Saskatchewan. Oil sands found to be a leading source of air pollution in North America

2016-05-25 20:09:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Globe and Mail: A cloud of noxious particles brewing in the air above the Alberta oil sands is one of the most prolific sources of air pollution in North America, often exceeding the total emissions from Canada's largest city, federal scientists have discovered. The finding marks the first time researchers have quantified the role of oil-sands operations in generating secondary organic aerosols, a poorly understood class of pollutants that have been linked to a range of adverse health effects. The aerosols...

They are doing it surrounded by the volatile, explosive chemicals and compounds critical to pumping oil from some of the worlds largest reserves. Now in its third week, the fire's proximity to the billions of dollars worth of oil equipment, flammable liquids, and extraction sites had people fearful that the flames,...

Canada Fires Cost Oil Sands Production $760 Million

2016-05-19 14:19:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Inside Climate News: A new report into the financial impact of the McMurray fires says some $760m (C$985m; 528m) in oil sands production has been lost. The analysis says the blaze has meant the loss of 1.2 million barrels of oil a day over two weeks. The sum is equivalent to 0.33% of the province of Alberta's projected GDP this year, as well as representing 0.06% of the country's projected GDP. "These are big numbers," Kevin Birn, an analyst at IHS Energy, said. "The industry was already feeling the impact...
