Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp said on Thursday it took a 68.6 billion yen charge in the April-December period as a slump in oil prices was hurting profits at its pipe affiliate in Brazil. Japan's biggest steelmaker, which also supplies steel pipes to oil and gas companies globally, expects the drop in oil to have a negative impact on its earnings for the next business year starting in April, an executive said.

A Chicago-bound flight from Los Angeles International Airport was searched Tuesday afternoon after the jet landed at O'Hare International Airport because of yet another Twitter-posted bomb threat, bomb threats having been made against outbound San Diego flights. This was the fourth day in a row for tweeted bomb threats against airliners, threats having been made Monday and Tuesday against Southwest planes departing from San Diego.

Apple Inc has shipped the most number of smartphones in China in the fourth quarter, overtaking Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and homegrown companies such as Xiaomi [XTC.UL] for the first time, according to data firm Canalys. Apple's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launched last September have proved to be popular in Asia despite being costlier than most handsets.
