According to a local news website, Honolulu Civil Beat , Monsanto and Dow -- two of the world's largest biotech and agricultural conglomerates, have amassed an $8 million war chest to beat back a Maui County voter initiative that would ban temporarily all GMO farming, according to documents filed with the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission.

A group backed by biotech companies raised more than $7.9 million to fight a Maui ballot initiative calling for a moratorium on genetically modified organisms. The group's reports for the period of Aug. 10 to Oct. 20 show expenditures included $4.2 million in advertising, nearly $500,000 in direct mailing and $1.2 million on a Los Angeles company that specializes in ballot measure campaigns.
