As early as 2000 years ago, farmers applied growth promoting substances to their fields to increase yield. Industrial production of fertilizer began in the mid-19th century when the effectiveness of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium were recognized. The production of nitrogen compounds is based on ammonia, which has become one of the most widely manufactured chemicals in the world.
