(Telecompaper) Shipping magnate and Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis dropped a deal to acquire debt-ridden telecoms operator Forthnet after prolonged negotiations with local banks Alpha Bank, Piraeus and National failed, according to online publication SportBusiness.com. Forthnet is the parent company of Greek pay-television broadcaster Nova.

(Telecompaper) Our Eurpean Telecom Services index was up 1.2 percent for week 38, outperforming the EuroStoxx 50 (+0.6%). Forthnet, the Greek ISP, led as it gained 66 percent on takeover news. Altice Europe (+14%) and Tele2 (+7.0%) also did well. Iridium, down 16 percent, was the weakest stock. Year-to-date, our index is up 9.0 percent, far behind the EuroStoxx 50, which is up 19.0 percent.

(Telecompaper) The Telecompaper Stock Index European Telecoms Services was up 1.8 percent in week 27, narrowly beating the EuroStoxx 50 index (+1.6%). Ahead of the Q2 earnings season the news flow was mainly limited to a number of mergers progressing. A diverse set of shares made the biggest gains: Greek challenger Forthnet (+16%), German cableco Tele Columbus (+13%), satellite operator Intelsat (+9.9%) and Spanish convergence operator MasMovil (+8.7%). Forthnet, a penny-stock, is closing in on doubling its share price year to date. Tele Columbus is making a remarkable recovery.

(Telecompaper) The European telecoms sector had a positive week. The Telecompaper telecoms index rose by 1.1 percent during week 14, just shy of the EuroStoxx 50's gain of 1.4 percent. Satellite company Intelsat (+36%) and Greek challenger Forthnet (+18%), a takeover candidate, were the biggest winners. TIM (+11%) benefitted from an ongoing battle for its management, with CDP buying a 5 percent stake and Elliott raising its stake to 10 percent.
