Alcatel-Lucent improves margins, cash flow in Q3

(Telecompaper) Alcatel-Lucent reported third-quarter revenues down 5 percent year-on-year to EUR 3.43 billion. Adjusted operating profit improved to EUR 212 million from EUR 170 million a year ago, as the company completed about 90 percent of the cost savings targeted under its 'Shift Plan'. The gross margin was up 50 basis points year-over-year to 34.5 percent, and the adjusted operating margin expanded 100 points to 6.2 percent. The net result was still a loss of EUR 206 million, widening from EUR 18 million a year ago due to a goodwill impairment charge on ASN. Operating cash flow moved to a positive EUR 83 million versus negative EUR 61 million a year earlier. For 2015 as a whole, Aclatel-Lucent forecast Core Networking revenues of EUR 6.8-7.0 billion and an adjusted operating margin similar to 2014, owing to the dilutive contribution from ASN. The submarine networks division has suffered from delays in contractual implementation of awards and continued softness in some geographies, notably Japan, the company said. The Access division, after reaching record profitability in Q3, is expected to largely exceed the operating cash flow target of EUR 200 million for 2015.

Nokia improves FY margin target, Q3 sales down 2%

(Telecompaper) Nokia reported third-quarter sales down 2 percent year-on-year to EUR 3.04 billion. Excluding currency effects, sales fell 10 percent. Adjusted earnings declined 11 percent to EUR 0.08 per share, and reported earnings dropped to EUR 0.05 from EUR 0.57 per share a year ago when the company booked a deferred tax asset. Adjusted operating profit was still 4 percent higher at EUR 475 million, due largely to savings at group level. Nokia Networks recorded sales down 2 percent to EUR 2.88 billion, and adjusted operating profit fell 2 percent to EUR 391 million. Despite the weaker result, Nokia said it still expects sales growth at the networks business over the full year and to maintain strong profitability. It now expects Networks to achieve the high end of the long-term adjusted operating margin target of 8-11 percent in 2015.

Bharti Airtel improves margins as revenues rise 4%

(Telecompaper) Indian operator Bharti Airtel reported a continued increase in sales and profits for its fiscal second quarter, driven by strong demand for mobile data services. Revenues rose 4 percent year-on-year to INR 238.36 billion, and EBITDA was up 7 percent to INR 82.65 billion, helping the margin expand to 34.7 percent from 33.9 a year ago. Despite a doubling in financing costs, the sale of towers infrastructure helped the company still post a 10 percent rise in net profit to INR 15.23 billion. Capital expenditure jumped 35 percent to INR 50.34 billion on the expansion of 3G and 4G networks, leading to a 20 percent drop in operating cash flow to INR 32.31 billion.
