Duke Energy has agreed to pay Virginia a $2.5 million settlement for its February 2014 coal ash spill into the Dan River. The spill at a retired power plant in Eden dumped up to 39,000 tons of ash into the river, which flows north into Virginia.

Senate Bill 912 would reduce reporting requirements for utility providers that spill less than 1,000 gallons of untreated and partially treated sewage as long as the spill is contained before it reaches waters of the state, including tributaries and lakes and does not threaten public or private sources of drinking water or endanger the environment and human health or safety. Texas law requires utility providers to report spills of any size to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within 24 hours.

Feds charge Union Pacific for 2012 sulfuric acid spill in Kansas

Federal prosecutors have filed a misdemeanor charge against Union Pacific Railroad over a 2012 spill of sulfuric acid in Kansas. A criminal information filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Kansas alleges the railroad spilled 114,297 pounds of sulfuric acid from a railcar in Herington into Lime Creek.

The Duke Energy board says incentive payments to the company's top executives, including CEO Lynn Good, were reduced to hold them accountable for the spill on the Dan River.
