Business briefing: Corn harvest on hold; beets at 97%

In its weekly crop progress and condition report for Minnesota, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that 6.1 days were suitable for fieldwork across Minnesota last week. It was only the fifth week this season when Minnesota farmers had more than six days suitable for fieldwork.

Sept. 15 Crop Progress: Corn harvest starts and soybeans dropping leaves; conditions remain stable

The latest USDA Crop Progress Report shows corn harvest starting in several states. The overall corn crop is just over 25% mature, which is behind average. Crop conditions remain over 70% good/excellent, and well ahead of last year's conditions. The soybean crop has been dropping leaves on almost a quarter of the overall crop. Part of the increase is due to reduced field and harvest losses, which account for 5-10 bushels/acre.
