Alcatel-Lucent improves margin, sales still lower in Q3

2014-10-30 08:34:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Alcatel-Lucent reported third-quarter revenues down 5.9 percent year-on-year to EUR 3.254 billion, as growth in the Asian LTE market was offset by weaker managed services in Europe and slower equipment sales in North America. The company's adjusted operating profit still improved, to EUR 170 million from EUR 113 million a year ago, on ongoing cost cuts in the 'Shift Plan'. Alcatel cut costs by EUR 73 million in Q3, for cumulative savings of EUR 645 million. SG&A expenses were notably down 13.6 percent compared to Q3 2013. The company still recorded a net loss of EUR 18 million, versus a loss of EUR 200 million a year ago, and operating cash flow was a negative EUR 61 million versus a positive 38 million a year earlier. Excluding restructuring charges, Alcatel managed EUR 1 million in free cash flow, and the company said it still expects to return to recurring free cash flow in 2015. CEO Michel Combes said Alcatel had entered the second chapter of the Shift Plan and would now focus on innovation to drive growth.

Nokia raises FY margin outlook after strong Q3

2014-10-23 08:53:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Nokia reported strong improvement in third-quarter results, driven by new LTE contracts in North America and China. Net sales rose 13 percent year-on-year to EUR 3.32 billion, and adjusted operating profit was up 33 percent to EUR 457 million. Net profit increased to EUR 760 million from EUR 138 million, and adjusted EPS rose 50 percent to EUR 0.09. The bottom line was impacted by a charge of EUR 1.2 billion to write down the value of goodwill at the location services unit Here. This was offset by a one-time benefit of EUR 2.1 billion on deferred tax assets in Finland and Germany. The strong operating results led to an upgrade in the outlook for Nokia Networks. The company now expects an annual operating margin of around 11 percent, versus its previous forecast for the high end of its long-term target range of 5-10 percent. The margin was 13.5 percent in Q3 and 11.5 percent over the first nine months of the year. The forecast is based on a high proportion of mobile broadband sales in Q3 and an expected higher proportion of service revenues in Q4.

Verizon wireless margin dips on higher hardware sales

2014-10-21 14:38:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Verizon reported another quarter of double-digit earnings growth in Q3, as it passed the milestone of over 100 million retail postpaid mobile connections. Earnings rose to USD 0.89 per share from USD 0.78 a year ago, driven by the buy-out of Vodafone's stake in Verizon Wireless. Operating revenues increased 4.3 percent year-on-year to USD 31.6 billion and were up 4.9 percent excluding divestments. The US operator maintained its outlook for around 4 percent revenue growth over the full year, but said the EBITDA margin will depend on the performance of the wireless activities in Q4. The wireless margin in Q3 was lower, due in part to higher costs for increased tablet sales. The company expects to reach the high end of its capital expenditure forecast of USD 16.5-17.0 billion this year, after spending USD 12.6 billion in the first nine months of 2014.
