SANTA CRUZ >> Safeway shoppers may start to see grocery checkers wearing blue and yellow buttons saying “Solidarity Works.” Negotiations are underway between Safeway and the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 8 Golden State, with 29,000 members, and United Food & Commercial Workers Local 648, with 3,800 members. Safeway has 813 employees in Santa Cruz County, according to Keith Turner, Safeway Northern California director of public and government affairs.
