Huawei launches first Honor phone, smartband in US

(Telecompaper) Huawei has confirmed the launch of its Honor 5X smartphone in the US, the first of its online-only brand Honor to reach the country. Targeting "internet-minded millennials", the Honor 5X features a metal body available in a choice of gold, silver or grey finishes. It will go on sale 31 January on Amazon.com, Newegg.com and HiHonor.com/us at USD 199.99. Inspired by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, the Honor 5X's aluminum alloy body has a curved back with a fingerprint sensor for unlocking the phone, as well as other gesture controls such as making a call or launching an app during locked mode, taking photos, pulling down and hiding the notification bar as well as canceling an alarm. It comes with a 13MP back camera and 5MP front camera. Other features include a 5.5-inch, 10-point multi-touch Full-HD IPS display, 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of memory, 3,000 mAh battery and microSD card slot. Honor is also launching the Z1 smartband, a lightweight, water-resistant wearable with health, sports and fitness tracking capabilities. The band and will be available on HiHonor.com/us starting 31 January at USD 79.99.

The Shenzhen-based company said on Wednesday its smartphone shipments rose 44 per cent annually to 108 million in 2015, thanks to strong sales in China and Western Europe as it seeks to shed its budget supplier image to target higher-margin premium models.
