TSX registers small advance after heavy losses; oil prices move higher
2015-01-07 23:08:02| Apparel - Topix.net
The Toronto stock market closed modestly higher Wednesday as investors tried to mount a relief rally after two days of punishing losses sparked by a collapse in oil prices to below US$50 a barrel and worries about the effects of such a decline. But the rally largely fizzled as the S&P/TSX composite index came down from a 180-point run-up early in the morning to close up 38.23 points at 14,285, regaining little of the more than 500-point plunge over the previous two sessions.

U-T San Diego: A new state fee on gasoline designed to combat global warming arrived at the corner gas station on New Years Day, but tumbling oil prices are likely to insulate consumers for the time being. Its a lucky break for lawmakers who, concerned about political backlash, made a failed attempt to delay the fee. The amount of Californias new fee is determined by a complex market for emissions rather than set by legislation. The market has been stable amid heavy regulation, yet critics say it could...

EcoWatch: When fracking and horizontal drilling made the oil embedded in North Dakotas underground Bakken shale formation accessible for extraction, it touched off something akin to a gold rush in the state. Oil production has grown 600 percent in the last decade. Small towns, called man camps, have sprouted with growing populations of oil field workers, bringing both increased economic activity and employment and increased crime and social problems such as sexual assaults. But plummeting oil prices...
