Ancient bones point to shifting grassland species as climate changes

ScienceDaily: More rainfall during the growing season may have led to one of the most significant changes in Earth's vegetation in the distant past, and similar climate changes could affect the distribution of plants in the future as well, a new study suggests. In a report in Science Advances, an analysis was done of mammoth and bison hair, teeth and bones, along with other data. It concludes that a changing climate -- particularly increasing rainfall and not just atmospheric carbon dioxide -- explains the expansion...

In Antarctica, displaced penguins may be a sign of climate change

2016-03-26 15:12:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

PRI: When researchers who study Adelie penguins in Antarctica returned to their study site to find most of the birds gone, the event made headlines. But the headlines were mostly wrong, according to the researchers. No one knows for sure what became of the missing birds, but Kerry-Jayne Wilson, one of the lead researchers and the author of a new paper about the event, wants to make one thing clear: I don't know where the 150,000 dead penguins came from. Nearly All Meteorologists Accept The Fact That Climate Change Is Happening

2016-03-25 19:53:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ThinkProgress: Among climate scientists, there`s a consensus that climate change is real and driven by human activity. Among meteorologists and weathercasters, however, that acceptance of climate science has historically been harder to find. That may have finally changed. Some 99 percent of U.S. weathercasters - those who communicate weather forecasts on TV or radio, but who aren`t always trained meteorologists - accept the fact that climate change is happening, according to preliminary findings from a George...

Climate change may ruin wine production, scientists warn

2016-03-25 14:41:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Independent: Wine production will be severely hampered by climate change in the long run, according to new research. The rise in global temperatures has seen the European wine industry enjoy a boom in recent years with better quality grapes being harvested but it will not last forever. In western Europe, the best wines are produced in hot summers when end-of-season droughts are followed by heavy spring rains. Indian summers reduce surface moisture and dry out the soil which makes the grapes ready for...
