Huawei, Qualcomm, Imec back SMIC R&D centre

(Telecompaper) Chinese foundry Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) has partnered with Huawei, Belgian R&D centre Imec and Qualcomm to set up a research and development centre in Shanghai. The joint venture company SMIC Advanced Technology Research & Development (Shanghai) Corp will focus on next-generation CMOS logic technology at the 14nm level. Belgium's King Phillipe attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the venture, which will be majority owned by SMIC. In the first phase, the joint venture company will develop 14 nm CMOS technology for mass production, which will be based on Imec's expertise in advanced semiconductor processing technology. The R&D project will be conducted at SMIC's production line. SMIC will have the rights to license the resulting intellectual property, helping to facilitate the mass production of 16/14nm ICs in China by 2020, which is one of the goals set by the National IC Industry Development Outline.

Aldi hits back at Wesfarmers 'misinformed' tax claim

On Monday, Mr Goyder urged authorities to "go and have a good look at how much tax Aldi pays in this country", saying all players in the Australian grocery market should be on the same level playing field as Coles and Woolworths. Responding to Mr Goyder's comments, Aldi issued a statement on Tuesday refuting "any and all" claims that it was not compliant with Australian taxation regulations.

NY lawmakers back crackdown on unregistered car dealers

New York legislators have approved a bill intended to crack down on unregistered car dealers who use city streets as showrooms. So-called "curbstoners" are unlicensed car dealers who sell used cars for profit on public streets and are unregulated and untaxed.

Survey Shows Growing Number Back British Farming

UK - The public’s positive view of farmers has grown for a fourth year running. A new survey from OnePoll shows that 68 per cent of people in England and Wales share a favourable or very favourable view of UK farmers – up from 60 per cent in 2012.
