Experts unconvinced latest reforms will save the European carbon market

Carbon Brief: Policymakers have long asserted that making polluters pay is an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But with Europe's carbon market floundering, the EU is having to rethink how to go about setting a carbon price. Carbon pricing only works as a climate change policy if the cost of emitting carbon dioxide is high enough to make companies change their behaviour. But the European carbon price has rarely been high enough to make that happen, and has plummeted in recent years. That...

Korea aims for 30 per cent cut in carbon emissions by 2020

Eco-Business: The Korean government aims to cut the country's greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent from projected levels by 2020 to hold back global warming, the Ministry of Environment said Tuesday. The plan is aimed at reducing 233 million carbon dioxide equivalent tonnes by 2020, a 30 per cent cut from the expected 2020 BAU level of 776 million tCO2e, according to the ministry officials. The target was originally set in 2011 by the former administration of President Lee Myung-bak. The officials said...
