Germany's Wintershall says it is buying shares in North Sea oil and gas fields from Norwegian company Statoil for $1.25 billion. Wintershall, a subsidiary of BASF SE, said Friday that the transaction is expected to close by the end of the year.

German automakers are aggressively expanding production in the U.S., announcing billions in new investments this year and adding thousands of American jobs. Daimler AG became the most recent German manufacturer to boost its position in the U.S., announcing Friday it will expand capacity at its Vance, Alabama, plant by 60,000 vehicles after it built a record 185,000 Mercedes-Benz SUVs there in 2013.
