Google pushes Chrome app store with more money-making options for devs

Google yesterday said it would let developers of Chrome packaged apps issue free trials and offer in-app purchases, and allow creators of browser extensions to charge for their wares for the first time. The moves were described by Google as additional ways for developers to monetize their work building apps and add-ons for Chrome (the browser) and Chrome OS, the lightweight operating system that powers cheap Chromebook notebooks.

Google Issues Clarion Call for Project Ara Devs

Google is ramping up its plans to bring the Project Ara modular smartphone to market by scheduling its first developer conference. The company will hold the conference on April 15-16 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. A limited number of developers will be able to attend the conference in person, but anyone can participate online through a live stream and interactive Q&A.

Devs Will Get to Put IBM's Watson Through Its Paces

IBM plans to open up its Watson cognitive platform, allowing developers to access it in the cloud starting next year. The technology is based on its Watson supercomputer. Participants will build apps incorporating Watson's cognitive computing intelligence. A cognitive computing system is "capable of continually learning and refining itself through human/computer interaction," said IBM's Rob High.

Unbounded Robotics unveiled the UBR-1 on Monday, a $35,000 platform designed to provide engineers with functional robot hardware to aid development of apps for the device. The company is a spinoff of Willow Garage, which launched the PR2, a $400,000 robot that in addition to functioning in manufacturing and service environments, could do the laundry, file paperwork or open the door.
