As debate roils over EPA regulations proposed this month limiting the release of the potent greenhouse gas methane during fracking operations, a new University of Vermont study funded by the National Science Foundation shows that abandoned oil and gas wells near fracking sites can be conduits for methane escape not currently being measured.

Legislative consultants: Pipeline buyout decision unlikely to affect Alaska's finances

The Alaska Legislature's oil and gas consultants said in a report released Sunday that the buyout decision facing lawmakers at their special session here is unlikely to have a significant effect on the state's finances. The administration of Gov. Bill Walker is asking lawmakers to approve spending $150 million to increase the state's share in the natural gas pipeline megaproject it's pursuing with three oil companies.

Pipeline resolution makes sense for county

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors did the right thing Tuesday by approving a resolution asking Gov. Terry McAuliffe to do whatever it takes to make sure construction of the proposed Mountain Valley Pipeline is monitored closely, if it is indeed built. The fear is that the Department of Environmental Quality would not have the manpower to properly oversee construction of the 42-inch natural gas line that would cross the length of Franklin County from Cahas Mountain to near Penhook.
