Keryx says anemia drug succeeds in study of kidney patients

Keryx Biopharmaceuticals Inc on Tuesday said its drug to treat iron deficiency anemia in chronic kidney disease patients not yet requiring dialysis met the goals of a late stage clinical trial, potentially paving the way for an expanded approval of the treatment. In the 16-week study of 234 patients with moderate to severe kidney disease, 52 percent of those who received Keryx's ferric citrate saw their hemoglobin levels rise by at least 1 gram per deciliter of blood during the trial.

Boston-based Keryx Biopharmaceuticals has reported what it calls "progress" in the launch of its drug for dialysis patients, called Auryxia, in recent months, including expanded insurance coverage in the U.S., success in contacting potential prescribers and likely European approval in coming months. Keryx , which moved its headquarters to Boston last year from New York City, reported Auryxia sales of just $1.8 million in the second quarter since the drug's launch.

The OLE findings were presented as a late-breaking poster at the 2014 American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week meeting in Philadelphia, PA.
